Just a short drive away in Maffra lies one of our absolute favourite local secrets: Bellbird Corner Riverside Reserve. Following the route of an old, disused road beside the Macalister River, this stunning pocket of nature feels miles away from civilisation.
The trail itself is a very manageable 2.6-kilometre loop comprised of flat dirt and gravel paths, making it perfect for dogs (and humans!) of all fitness levels. The path follows the meandering Macalister River and Newry Creek, an area rich in Gunaikurnai history and lush riverbank vegetation.
As you walk under the canopy of Gippsland Red Gums and Silver Wattles, keep an eye out for local wildlife. While the Bell Miners (the birds the corner was named after) have moved on, the area is still a haven for native birds. Because it is a quiet, less-frequented trail, it is the perfect place for a serene morning sniffari with your dog.
2. The Macalister River Walk (Maffra)

The path is mostly gravel, featuring two picturesque bridge crossings over the river. With no steps and only gentle inclines, it is a breeze for older dogs or families pushing prams. Along the way, you will find a fantastic interactive playground, public toilets, and electric BBQs.
Best of all for energetic pups? The Maffra parklands feature designated dog off-leash areas where your dog can burn off some zoomies before you head back to your peaceful country retreat.
3. The Gippsland Plains Rail Trail (Tinamba to Maffra)

You don’t even need to get in the car for this one! The famous Gippsland Plains Rail Trail passes right through Tinamba, just moments from our front gate. The entire trail stretches for over 60 kilometres from Traralgon to Stratford, but the 8-kilometre stretch between Tinamba and Maffra is one of the most scenic and accessible legs.
Built on the former Gippsland Plains railway line, the trail is wide, relatively flat, and features a high-quality gravel surface. It is incredibly popular with cyclists, but it is also a fantastic walking route for dogs on a lead.
Take a leisurely stroll past lush dairy pastures, historic railway remnants, and sweeping views of the Great Dividing Range. Remember to bring your own waste bags and clean up after your pet, as keeping the trail pristine ensures dogs will always be welcome!
4. Lake Glenmaggie Foreshore
