What Is the Maffra Show, Exactly?
The Maffra Show is the real deal – an honest-to-goodness agricultural show that’s been running since 1862, organised by the Maffra & District Agricultural, Pastoral and Horticultural Society. That’s more than 160 years of cattle judging, ribbon-winning pumpkins and kids clutching showbags nearly as big as they are. It’s held every October, and it’s exactly the kind of show you picture when someone says “country show”: livestock and cattle judging in the main ring, equestrian events, wood chopping that draws a genuine crowd, sheep shearing demonstrations, vintage and modern machinery on display, local produce and craft stalls, and a night carnival with sideshow alley lighting up after dark.
It isn’t a polished, corporate event, and that’s the whole point. You’ll walk a fair few kilometres across grass and dirt between pavilions, you’ll queue for a Devonshire tea next to someone who’s been showing cattle since before you were born, and you’ll probably leave with a show bag you didn’t need and a meat pie you absolutely did. The Maffra Dog Show: Gippsland’s Biggest Day for Dog Lovers
Come August, the same showgrounds host a completely different crowd. The Sale-Maffra & District Kennel Club runs its all-breeds championship show at the Maffra Recreation Reserve, and if you’ve never been, it’s worth the trip even if you don’t own a dog. Handlers and exhibitors travel in from right across Victoria with everything from toy breeds to Great Danes, grooming tables get set up under gazebos at first light, and the ring commentary runs pretty much non-stop until the last Best in Show ribbon is handed out.
The official name of the event is the Gippsland International Winter Festival – All Breeds Championship Show and it’s a proper championship event. It is judged under the official system and it genuinely draws a crowd of dedicated dog people who take the whole weekend seriously – in the best possible way. Camping is available right on the showgrounds for exhibitors who want to be close to the action from Thursday or Friday night, with powered and unpowered sites both on offer. It works, but let’s be honest about what “showgrounds camping” actually gets you: a powered site, a shared amenities block, and not much else after a long day of showing, grooming and trying to keep a nervous dog calm in a paddock full of other dogs.
